It is very easy to be cynical about the state of our country, especially as a young person. But the harder thing to do is have hope. Having hope means that you believe that there is another way of being, one that is better and fairer to all.
During the Soweto uprisings, students had so much hope they could make a change that they were willing to put their bodies and lives on the line for their education.
On Thursday, 16 June 2022, South Africa commemorated Youth Day, recognising the role of the youth in the liberation of South Africa from the apartheid regime, but also to pay tribute to the lives lost in the Soweto Uprising 1976.
It reminds us of the power that young people have to create change. So why not embrace that power and keep on changing the future. For the new youth to come. For our children, and our children’s children. To leave a legacy of peace! A legacy of power! And a legacy of HOPE!
So yes, take a moment or two to think about what it has taken South Africa to get to where we are today. And then make a decision to embrace the future! To make a change. To not only have an opinion, but to take action!
Remember the past, celebrate the present and embrace the future!
