Women generally put others first. Yes, that’s what we do!
BUT, this month of October, we want women to realise that they too have the right to prioritise their health.
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among South African women – and its incidence is rising.
As with many other cancers, early detection is absolutely crucial in ensuring effective treatment and a positive outcome – about 90% of women who are diagnosed early with breast cancer and treated appropriately survive for many years afterwards.
But with this being said, many women are still being diagnosed daily. Maybe woman very close to you, maybe even yourself.
Most people are shocked to hear they have breast cancer and experience many different emotions including anger, fear, sadness and depression.
Feelings can change from day to day and even hour to hour. It’s often difficult to know what to say and how best to support someone. Just being alongside someone and allowing them to express how they’re feeling is probably one of the most important ways of supporting them.
We need each other to help fight cancer, this is not a one-man fight!
We need to remind ourselves and each other to go for regular cancer screening as early detection saves lives. We need to know the early warning signs and symptoms of cancer so that we can be informed and seek help if needed.
If you’ve never had a mammogram, make an appointment during breast cancer awareness month of October. You can take a friend or family member with you to remind them as well and afterward you’ll have peace of mind.
Let’s fight together! Let’s win together!
