Acid, Alkali and Sulphate Resistance — Matched to Your Chemistry.
Durocast: Supplying Chemical & Acid Resistant Linings, Floors and Mortars Nationwide
Ordinary Portland-cement concrete is quickly destroyed by acids, and steel corrodes wherever acid vapour, spills or condensate reach it. Across South Africa — in chemical and fertiliser plants, metal refineries, pulp and paper mills, breweries and wastewater works — that corrosion costs plants money in repairs, downtime and safety risk.
Durocast (Pty) Ltd manufactures chemical and acid resistant concretes, gunning mixes and mortars in Vereeniging and supplies them nationwide, together with Alkacrete for alkaline duty.
Start With the Chemistry, Not the Product
The right lining depends on what attacks it. Strong mineral acids such as sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric and phosphoric call for a potassium silicate bonded system. Mildly acidic water, sulphates, beer and organic acids around pH 3.5–4.0 can be handled by a faster, more economical cementitious product. Caustic solutions and black liquor need the opposite: an alkali-resistant concrete. Choosing by chemistry avoids both premature failure and over-specification.
Three Durocast Families for Three Kinds of Attack
Acicrete 1S / Acispray 1S / Aciset 1S and the economical Acicrete 1 / Acispray 1 / Aciset 1 are potassium silicate bonded concrete, gunning and mortar for almost all acids except hydrofluoric. Acicrete 4 / Acispray 4 / Aciset 4 are rapid-hardening products for acid water to pH 3.5–4.0 and sulphates, Duroshield 60 is a high-strength rapid-hardening floor concrete with mild-acid resistance, and Alkacrete resists alkalis and sulphates. Full details are on the Chemical & Acid Resistant Products page.
Where Durocast Products Are Used Across South Africa
- Chimneys, stacks, ducts and breechings — monolithic acid-resistant linings.
- Scrubbers, precipitators and process vessels — Acicrete and Acispray linings.
- Chemical-plant and refinery floors — monolithic topping instead of acid brick and tile.
- Brewery and food-plant floors and drains — Acicrete 4 for beer, lactic acid and waste water.
- Pulp-mill areas — Alkacrete for black liquor and caustic duty.
The South African Industries Durocast Supplies
Nationwide, Durocast chemical and acid resistant products protect:
- Chemicals and fertilisers — acid plants, storage and process areas.
- Metals and refining — pickling, plating and refinery floors.
- Pulp and paper — alkali and black-liquor zones.
- Food and beverage — breweries, dairies and processing plants.
- Water and wastewater — sulphate-attacked structures and sumps.
Formulated, Tested and Supported Locally
Durocast formulates and manufactures every product in Vereeniging, and its technical staff can test materials against your process chemistry before you commit. Design advice is available for new linings and repairs. More about the company is on our About Us page.
Regional Pages for South Africa’s Chemical Hubs
Durocast also has dedicated pages for Gauteng, with its food, beverage and metal-finishing plants, and the Vaal Triangle, where the Sasolburg chemical cluster and Vanderbijlpark steelworks sit on Durocast’s doorstep. Elsewhere in the country, our team specifies from your chemical exposure, temperature and existing substrate.
Why South African Plants Specify Durocast
- Acid, mild-acid and alkali systems from one manufacturer
- Concrete, gunning and mortar versions of each acid range
- Monolithic floors as an alternative to acid brick and tile
- Test facilities and design advice in Vereeniging

Frequently Asked Questions
Which acids can Acicrete 1S resist?
Almost all acids in most concentrations except hydrofluoric acid and fluoride salts. It is especially recommended for nitric, hydrochloric, phosphoric and sulphuric acids.
What is the difference between Acicrete, Acispray and Aciset?
They are the same chemistry in three forms: Acicrete is a castable concrete, Acispray is applied by gunning and Aciset is a mortar.
Is there a product for caustic or black liquor?
Yes — Alkacrete is formulated to resist alkalis and sulphates, including NaOH and KOH up to 10%, and was designed for black liquor in paper mills.
Can I replace acid brick and tile with a monolithic floor?
Yes — Acicrete can be laid as a monolithic floor topping in chemical plants and refineries as an alternative to acid brick and tile.
Where can I compare the full range?
Every Durocast chemical and acid resistant product is described on the Chemical & Acid Resistant Products page.
