Women’s Day in South Africa is observed on the 9th of August annually. This day was designated to commemorate the 1956 march which involved about 20 000 women marching to the Union Buildings in an effort to bring about racial equality in South African society. But how can we actively continue to celebrate Women’s Day, and not only one day of the year, but every day?
Have a beautiful celebration.
Why not gather a few of your girlfriends and have a breakfast or lunch together. Just celebrate each other with beautiful conversations and meaningful time together.
Send a woman in your life a special gift.
This can be a friend, sister, mother, boss, any lady you admire. And the gift doesn’t have to be big. It can be something handmade, a flower picked in the field or just a beautiful message. But remind the woman around you that they are worthy and appreciated.
Learn more and educate yourself
Although Women’s Day is all about celebrating women, it’s also about tackling issues that are difficult to discuss, like gender-based violence. Take some time to learn more about these topics, and find out how you can make a difference or an active contribution to making South African society safer for women.
Take care of yourself
In order for you to show up for others, you have to be able to show up for yourself first. Make sure you’re taking care of your mental, emotional and physical health.
Take Women’s Day off to recharge and completely focus on yourself. Book a day at the spa, take a social media detox or meditate in nature. Your body, mind and soul will thank you for it!
Support women-owned businesses
A great way to support Women’s Day overall, is to support women-owned businesses. Make a conscious effort to empower women who are entrepreneurs; from the lady on the side of the road who sells snacks, to the bakery on the corner of your street. Online or in person, actively supporting the women around you will make a huge difference in their lives.
